Keep the Lord’s Prayer in the WA Parliament

The Lord’s Prayer is recited daily at the commencement of Parliament and is an important tradition.

In Western Australia, this tradition is currently under threat following a call in June 2026 by Labor MP Dave Kelly for the Lord’s Prayer to be replaced with a minute of silence during the current review of parliamentary standing orders.

As outlined in recent policy briefings, pluralism does not require the erasure of Christian heritage. A genuinely plural society should be capable of recognising its historical foundations while protecting the freedom of all people to believe, not believe, participate, or abstain.

The Lord’s Prayer represents institutional humility, moral accountability, and continuity with Australia’s constitutional heritage.

The reciting of the Lord’s Prayer is consistent with the Australian Constitution which says in its preamble that we are a people who humbly rely on the blessings of Almighty God.

It is also a recognition of a greater power: Almighty God, his goodness and role as the source of provision, forgiveness, holiness, and salvation.
