Keep families, faith and freedom out of the criminal law in Tasmania

Tasmanian families should be able to talk openly about faith, relationships, sexuality and personal conduct without worrying that a loving conversation could become a legal matter.
The proposed Conversion Practices Prohibition Bill 2026 goes far beyond banning coercion, abuse and genuinely harmful conduct. Its broad language refers to a “practice or conduct” and says consent is irrelevant to the definition. That raises serious concerns for parents, churches and other faith communities.
A conversation, pastoral discussion or prayer could be scrutinised if it were interpreted as encouraging someone to change or suppress their sexual orientation or gender identity.
No law should place ordinary parental guidance or religious care under a cloud of potential criminal and civil liability.
Please email your local Tasmanian Parliamentarians. Ask them to reject the Conversion Practices Prohibition Bill 2026 in its entirety—not merely amend it—and to protect families, religious freedom and genuine pastoral care.
Thank you for standing up for Tasmanian families.
