Protecting parental choice and Christian schools in WA

Christian schools rely on a distinctive foundation of faith to provide a holistic community for students.

In WA, the Attorney General Tony Buti has signalled that significant amendments to the Equal Opportunity Act will be proposed in Parliament before the end of this year.

It is likely to be based on the 2022 recommendations of the Law Reform Commission of Western Australia (LRCWA).

If those recommendations are adopted, Christian schools will lose much of their freedom to be what parents chose them to be.

This proposal would allow external tribunals to determine which jobs in a Christian school are “religious enough” to require aligned beliefs, stripping schools of their ability to hire staff who share their faith.

Research shows that 74% of parents choosing Christian schools do so specifically because of this value alignment.

Parents make significant sacrifices to secure an education that reinforces their family’s worldview.
